English Language Arts
II. Objectives/Standards:
TSWBAT: identify new words spelling, literary skills and vocabulary. After the lesson the students will have a broad understanding of general concepts such as root words, compound words, and cause-effects to teacher satisfaction. This is the beginning lesson to the unit.
Standard - CC.1.2.4.E Use text structure to interpret information (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/ solution).
Standard - CC.1.3.4.F Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in grade-level text
Standard - CC.1.4.4.R Demonstrate a grade-appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
III. Teaching Procedures:
A. Introduction: Spelling pre-test

1. Students will begin the day by completing a spelling pre-test. I will begin by passing out the student pretest, covering the week’s spelling words. Then I will read each word for the student twice, and use each word in a sentence. The students will be asked to spell the words to the best of their ability.

2. I will then pass out red pens to the students to self-correct their papers. As a whole group the class will grade their completed tests.
3. We will define what compound words as a group
i. Definition: When two smaller words are pushed together to form a new word with its own meaning, a compound word is made.

ii. Compound Words Activity: Students will be divided into three groups in sections students will be given notecards that have on them different pieces of their compound words. The students will them have to figure out how the words fit correctly to make compound words. The first team down wins a prize!

4. In partners students will then be asked to complete pages 215 and 220 in their Reader Writer Notebooks. Then the class will come back together to review as a whole group.

C. Demonstrate Cause and Effect examples (Use Angry Birds worksheet is attached)
1. Cause: An event or action that causes something else to happen.

2. Effect: An event or action that happens because of something else
Example words: then, so, as a result
3. Play cause and effect game: The students must identify the cause and effect; and how the pattern is shown:

If I bring blue books than a pink rabbit will show up

The game is continued with examples until students begin to catch on. The student to first identify the correct cause gets to lead next; creating their own cause.
D. Closure: Assign packet as homework due Wednesday.

Formative assessment of the students will be noted based on student responses and participation
